Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne (* January 19, 1839, † October 22, 1906) was a French artist. Cézanne’s work is associated with various artistic movements. While his early works were still shaped by Romanticism and Realism, his intensive engagement with Impressionist forms of expression led him to a new visual language that sought to give structure to the dissolving pictorial impression of Impressionist works. He abandoned illusionistic depth, broke with the rules established by representatives of Academic art, and aimed to renew classical methods of composition on the basis of Impressionist color space and principles of color modulation.
