Chaim Soutine
Chaim Soutine, born in 1893 in Smilavichy, Russian Empire; died on August 9, 1943 in Paris, was a French painter of Belarusian-Jewish origin.
Chaim Soutine was born in 1893 in Smilavichy, a Belarusian shtetl near Minsk with around 400 inhabitants. He was the tenth of eleven children of a poor Jewish tailor who mended clothes. Smilavichy consisted of a cluster of dilapidated wooden houses. His mother aged early, was taciturn, always full of worries, and was not particularly affectionate toward her children.
